According to 2025 data from Smithers, flexo now represents around 70% of traditional packaging print, while gravure accounts for approximately 30%.
Five years ago, based on multiple industry sources and market analyses, the split was significantly closer — roughly 55–60% flexo versus 40–45% gravure.
This implies a structural shift of approximately 10–15 percentage points over five years.
The change reflects how FMCG markets evolved:
• Shorter production runs — flexo reduces set-up risk
• More SKUs — flexo adapts without new cylinders
• Faster launches — flexo shortens lead times
• Tighter cost control per variant — flexo lowers start-up costs
Print shifted accordingly. For many applications, the decision is no longer about technology.
